On Thursday, Meta issued an apology, claiming to have corrected a “error” that caused some Instagram users to report an abundance of explicit and violent content that was suggested on their personal “Reels” page.
“We have corrected a bug that was causing some users to see inappropriate content in their Instagram Reels feed.
We regret the error,” a Meta representative told CNBC in a statement. The remark follows several Instagram users who expressed their worries on social media about a recent surge in violent and “not safe for work” content suggestions.
Even with Instagram’s “Sensitive Content Control” turned up to its most stringent moderation setting, some users reported seeing such material.
Meta policy is that it strives to shield users from upsetting visuals and eliminates extremely graphic or violent content. For example, “videos showing dismemberment, visible innards, or charred bodies” and “sadistic remarks towards imagery depicting the suffering of humans and animals” are prohibited.
