Stocks experienced a sharp decline on Wednesday, primarily driven by concerns that the bond market is signaling the Federal Reserve may be falling behind in its fight against inflation. The central bank’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged seemed to reinforce these worries.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 1,153.18 points, or 2.2%, closing at 51,594.14 marking its worst day since April 2025. The S&P 500 declined 1.5% to finish at 7,316.15, while the Nasdaq Composite fell by 1.7%, ending the day at 24,442.94.
In response to the Fed’s decision, the bond market saw notable movements: the 10-year Treasury yield jumped 7 basis points to over 4.67%, and the 30-year Treasury yield surged 10 basis points to above 5.2%. These levels are the highest they’ve been since 2007, signaling investor concerns about inflation and future interest rate policies.
