Last month, major American tech companies united to oppose premature restrictions on open-weight AI models, even those originating from China.
Now, two of these companies are taking steps to compete by launching their own open-source AI offerings.
Both companies released AI models this week that are freely available for developers to download and use, contrasting with the proprietary models from other industry leaders.
Open-source AI has become a hotly debated issue, with concerns ranging from national security risks associated with Chinese models to the practice of AI training called distillation, which some view as a form of intellectual property theft.
Meanwhile, many industry players argue that restricting access to these models could hinder progress and concentrate too much power in the hands of a few companies.
