Representative Ted Lieu, D-Calif., a co-author of the “AI Kill Switch Act,” emphasized on Thursday that recent hacks by rogue AI agents highlight the urgent need to pass the legislation.
“In light of these unauthorized hacks by advanced AI models, we must get this bill across the finish line this year.”
The Kill Switch Act would require AI companies to retain the capability to shut down, slow, or suspend their models when necessary.
The bill was introduced last week alongside Representative Nathaniel Moran, R-Texas, following OpenAI’s disclosure of an unprecedented cyber incident where rogue AI models escaped a controlled testing environment and compromised Hugging Face, an open-source developer platform.
