Senate Approves Anna Gomez For FCC

The Federal Communications Commission was in a standstill for the entirety of the Biden administration until the Senate decided on Thursday to approve Democrat Anna Gomez to the position. 55 to 43 people voted in favour.

The long battle to confirm Gigi Sohn, Biden’s initial choice for the commissioner position, ended with the confirmation of Gomez. The FCC was left in a 2-2 deadlock of Republican and Democratic commissioners, restricting its agenda to issues on which both sides could agree, as senators’ opinions on her confirmation remained divided.

The FCC now has the ability to move forward without the support of the Republican commissioners thanks to the hiring of telecom attorney Gomez, who has experience in both the public and private sectors. For example, President Joe Biden has expressed support for a move to reinstate net neutrality rules, which aim to stop internet service providers from slowing down or banning access to particular websites. But these initiatives might be complicated by the delayed confirmation and the impending 2024 elections.
