Imagine telling an AI agent your risk tolerance, retirement targets, and when your kids will start college then watching it manage your portfolio while you sleep.
This vision of agentic trading, where artificial intelligence not only suggests investments but also executes them, is becoming reality. Brokerages, startups, and retail investors are developing AI agents capable of overseeing portfolios and automating tasks once performed by humans.
“Almost everyone now has their own family office working around the clock for them, whether they’re awake or asleep,” said Devin Ryan, head of financial technology research at Citizens. “This isn’t 10 years away; it’s happening in the next few years.”
Ryan predicts these agents will do much more than buy and sell securities. He envisions AI continuously managing taxes, cash flow, borrowing, mortgages, and investment strategies all customized to an investor’s financial goals. While fully autonomous investing is still a work in progress, the race to develop it is already underway.
