Worker injuries are attributed to Amazon Prime Day, the 48-hour sales extravaganza that begins on Tuesday.
Just as Amazon is hosting its annual Prime Day sales extravaganza, the Senate’s Health, Education, Labour and Pensions (HELP) Committee announced the preliminary findings of a year-long study into working conditions in warehouses on Tuesday.
From internal data from Prime Day 2019, which the company gave the committee access to, it was found that Amazon’s overall injury rate was “just under” 45 injuries per 100 workers, or “nearly half of the company’s warehouse workers,” including injuries that the company is not required to report to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The HELP committee’s chair, independent senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders, said in a statement that Amazon “continues to treat its workers as disposable and with complete contempt for their safety and wellbeing.” “That has got to change because it is unacceptable.”
