Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin that American chipmakers are at least ten years away from “supply chain independence” from China.
Huang referred to the Biden administration’s initiative to cut China off from the U.S. semiconductor supply, saying, “We should absolutely go down the route of it,” during a speech at the New York Times’ DealBook Conference. But it won’t be very feasible for a decade or two to have complete supply chain independence.
Huang responded to a question on whether Nvidia should keep doing business with China by saying, “We’re a company that was created for business, so we strive to do business with anybody we can.” Conversely, it is important for our national security and competitiveness.
On November 21, Nvidia disclosed in its third-quarter results report that it anticipates a negative impact from U.S. export regulations in the upcoming fourth quarter.
Nvidia’s ability to export its most powerful GPUs—which are utilised in artificial intelligence—to China has been restricted by tighter export regulations. Huang informed Sorkin that “China does not have access to the most vital technology that we create, the cutting edge of it.”
