More than its eye-catching computer visuals, Meta’s Orion augmented reality glasses excel in terms of size and comfort.
This week during Meta’s annual Connect conference, CNBC senior media and tech correspondent Julia Boorstin had the opportunity to experience Orion.
She was immediately drawn to the prototype’s small size in comparison to the numerous virtual reality headsets from Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro.
On Wednesday, Orion glasses were shown by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who described them as “a glimpse of a future that I think is going to be pretty exciting.”
The thick-framed, black spectacles have a wireless “puck” that lets the device run apps such as holographic digital chess and ping-pong games, which show up as digital visuals blended with the actual world.
The multibillion dollar plans that Zuckerberg has for developing the next generation of personal computers for the so-called metaverse—a term coined by Meta to refer to online interactions between individuals in virtual three-dimensional spaces—include the experimental glasses.
